Emergency Dental Care FAQs
We know that having a dental emergency can be an unnerving experience and one that fills you with a lot of questions. Here are a few of the questions we hear a lot. If yours isn’t answered, please feel welcome to give our team a call.
How long will it take to fix my issue?
Although it’s hard to give a precise amount of time, the good news is we can usually do a lot on the first visit. This might mean you walk out completely back to normal after an hour visit, or it may mean you have a plan in place for follow-up visits to get the issue resolved. Either way, our team will communicate clearly so you know what to expect and have a clear plan in place for your emergency dental care.
Will I be in pain during my visit?
Most people who come to our Brisbane dental clinics are already in pain, and their dental emergency has caused a lot of emotional tension and discomfort. Thankfully, visiting us usually takes the pain away! This is because we’re able to offer pain relief and begin the process of treating the problem. Modern dental care involves sophisticated approaches and high-quality numbing techniques so that your in-chair pain is minimal.
Will my smile return to normal?
If your emergency dental issue has changed the way your smile looks, you’ll no doubt be eager to find a solution. While our initial priority will be the overall health and safety of your teeth, we will of course work on making things beautiful again. This may involve follow-up visits that are focused on cosmetic dentistry. Your dentist can explain your treatment options during your visit.
What should I do if my tooth is knocked out?
Having a tooth knocked out is a common emergency dental issue. If you have knocked out a tooth, it is important to handle the tooth correctly to keep it as clean and hygienic as possible. The tooth should be held by the ‘crown’ (the exposed end), not by the base or root, as this may damage cells that are necessary to aid bone reattachment.
Gently clean the tooth by rinsing in water or milk and if possible, gently place the clean tooth back in the tooth socket to keep it moist. Alternatively, if this isn’t possible, wrap the tooth in a clean cloth and immerse it in milk or saliva. Contact us as soon as possible to arrange an emergency dental appointment.
